ABOUT THE PROJECT

​

Sarah Nelson's award winning film portraiture series on a bike, Mobile Moments, has seen her simultaneously pedal, interview and film folk, resulting in short films screened and projected across Western Australia with credits including MarshArt, Proximity Festival, Summer Nights – The Blue Room Theatre, KicksART Festival and Performing Lines.

The project was conceived and developed in 2008 during a months artist residency with DADAA Inc. Working with youth from the Derby and Mowunjum communities in the Kimberely, Western Australia, the resulting first film was screened as a part of the 2008 MarshART Festival. 

 

In 2012 the project was presented as a part of the inaugural Proximity Festival in Perth Western Australia. Over 5 weeks, 5 films where produced and screened in the Perth Cultural Centre. From regional marshes to City streets,  series 2.0 provided a starkly contrasting environment and demographic for the bike to explore. From a free event in the Kimberly, to a paying audience in the city, these two extreme approaches informed the next stage of the project.  

 

The project returned in 2015 with the support of The City of Perth, for The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights program for Fringe World. Mobile Moments 3.0 merged these extremes and played with the possibilities of chance encounters across the city. Searching the streets and approaching participants only when a moment revealed itself, the artist was out there to connect and capture with a diverse cross section of the Perth community. This free event went on to win the best Community Events Award of the 2015 Fringe World awards.

 

Mobile Moments 4.0 took the project out on its first tour in 2015 to the south west of Western Australia. Presented by Performing Lines WA, the project was a part of the community engagement program for the Skeletal System's theatre production of The Great White.

Touring ahead of the production, the bike toured to Mandurah, Albany and Margaret River providing a free experience and film for the community to keep whilst subtly promoting the production with questions on the bike reflecting themes from the show.

3 films, 3 towns in 1.5weeks, each film was screened in the foyer of respective arts centres on the opening nite of the show.

Mobile Moments 5.0, presented by Propel Youth Arts WA brought the bike back onto the streets of Perth as a part of KickstART Festival 2016.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

 

Sarah Nelson is an actor, physical performer and creator of multidisciplinary projects, working across theatre, film and community arts. Sarah has worked from state theatre stages to deserts and many random spaces in between, producing her own projects alongside working for companies such as National Theatre of Great Britain/Global Creatures, Black Swan State Theatre Company, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Barking Gecko Theatre Company, DADAA Inc. and Performing Lines WA. Her mask performance work for The Last Great Hunt and UK’s Vamos Theatre has seen her perform across the world from UK, Japan, North America, South Africa and Europe.
